Contents home insurance provider comments on farm thefts
Farmers should be on their guard against fuel thefts from their outhouses, specialist contents home insurance provider NFU Mutual has warned.
According to the firm's own claims data, red diesel and heating oil thefts are both on the rise in rural areas as wholesale costs rise - going up by as much as 30 per cent in a year.
Recently, a 60-year-old farmer in Warwickshire even suffered a fractured skull after attempting to intercept a thief who had stolen diesel from his property.
He was hit by the assailant's 4x4 vehicle as he fled from the scene.
NFU Mutual spokesman Tim Price said: "This attack - and a similar incident in County Durham earlier in the year - in which a farmer's wife died and her son was injured - show the lengths thieves will go to steal oil.
"Waking up to find thieves in their farm yards is becoming one of many farmers worst nightmares as they know how serious the consequences could be."
